Natasha Akpoti sues colleague for N5bn over claim of having six children for different men

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has filed a ₦5 billion lawsuit against her colleague, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, over what she described as defamatory remarks made during a live television interview.
The suit, filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, was instituted by Akpoti-Uduaghan through her lead counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) M.J. Numa.
She is demanding compensation for the “false, malicious, and damaging” claims made by Nwaebonyi, who represents Ebonyi North and serves as the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate.
Nwaebonyi, during an appearance on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on March 6, 2025, allegedly described Akpoti-Uduaghan as a “gold digger,” “habitual liar,” and “blackmailer,” further claiming she had six children with different men and forced Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan into a marriage with her.
In response, Akpoti-Uduaghan stated the remarks were unfounded and intended to tarnish her image, especially as they were widely broadcast and shared online.
She maintained that the statements portrayed her falsely as manipulative, dishonest, and opportunistic.
The senator emphasized that the comments were deliberate and aimed at damaging her reputation and undermining her credibility, particularly as she challenges her suspension from the Senate.
As part of her relief, Akpoti-Uduaghan seeks a court order stopping further publication of the defamatory statements, a retraction across the same media outlets, and a public apology published in two national newspapers. She is also requesting ₦5 billion in damages and 10% post-judgment interest until full payment is made.
A date for the case hearing has not yet been scheduled.
