Pascal Dozie, the founder of the now-defunct Diamond Bank Plc and former chairman of MTN Nigeria, has died at the age of 85.

His family announced his death in a statement released on Tuesday, confirming that the renowned businessman died in the early hours of the day.

Uzoma Dozie, his son, shared the announcement on behalf of the family, expressing their grief and gratitude for a life well-lived.

“With deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, on 8th April 2025,” the statement read.

Described as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of strong Catholic faith, Dozie’s life was dedicated to service—to God, family, and nation. He is survived by his wife, Chinyere, children, and grandchildren.

Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, he was raised in a Catholic household. His academic journey began at Our Lady’s School, Emekuku, and led him to the London School of Economics and City University, London, where he earned degrees in Economics and Administrative Science.

Dozie was a key figure in Nigeria’s economic development. He established Diamond Bank in 1990, leading it until it merged with Access Bank, and played a major role in MTN Nigeria’s success as its founding chairman.

His visionary leadership and integrity earned him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger.
