A LagFerry boat, Igbega Eko, exploded and caught fire while en route to Victoria Island, leaving several passengers injured.

Confirming the incident, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) stated that its officers were on the ground to prevent the fire from spreading.

“There was a loud bang, and the boat was suddenly engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but investigations are ongoing,” a NIWA official told Tribune Online on Thursday morning.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) also confirmed the incident, stating that a full investigation was underway to determine the cause.

According to a statement from LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit, the fire occurred around 6:45 AM at the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu.

The agency reported that all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, though four passengers sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

LASWA assured the public that all safety measures remain in place and ferry operations continue as scheduled. The agency also urged passengers to remain calm and follow safety guidelines while using the waterways.
