The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) has revealed that boxer Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, who passed away in Accra, Ghana, on Saturday, was not approved for the fight that led to his tragic death.
Olanrewaju, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion, collapsed during his bout against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at Bukom Boxing Arena.
Reports indicate he was leading on points before the fatal incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses say the Nigerian fighter landed two weak punches before Mbanugu countered with a right hand to his face.
Moments later, Olanrewaju staggered backwards, collapsed against the ropes, and fell to the canvas.
Despite immediate medical attention, he was rushed to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to NBBofC Secretary-General Remi Aboderin, Olanrewaju was initially scheduled to fight on Friday but was deemed overweight during the weigh-in.
The fight was canceled after he rejected a proposed adjustment to his purse.
The late boxer later reconsidered, citing financial difficulties. While en route back to Lagos, he told his coach that he could not return home empty-handed and decided to take another fight back to Ghana without NBBofC approval.
His trainer, Babatunde Ojo, disclosed that he had advised Olanrewaju against taking the fight on such short notice, warning that he was not adequately prepared.
However, the boxer proceeded despite concerns from his camp.
The NBBofC has criticized the Ghana Boxing Association (GBA) for allowing Olanrewaju to fight without proper authorization.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian boxing community is mourning the loss of the veteran fighter.
