Nigerian boxer, Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, has passed away after collapsing in the ring during a boxing match in Ghana.
The 40-year-old fighter was competing against Ghanaian boxer John Mbanugu, known as “Power,” in an undercard bout of Ghana’s Professional Boxing League when the tragic incident occurred at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
During the match, Olanrewaju suddenly collapsed mid-fight, prompting the referee to immediately call for medical assistance.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports indicate he may have suffered a cardiac arrest.
A video circulating on social media captures the intense exchange between the two boxers before Olanrewaju stumbled and fell to the canvas, with just 15 seconds remaining in the third round of the scheduled eight-round fight.
His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, with tributes pouring in for the former National and West African light-heavyweight champion.
Olanrewaju, a well-respected figure in Nigerian boxing, had a professional career spanning 23 fights, securing 13 wins—12 by knockout—alongside eight losses and two draws, according to BoxRec.
However, in recent years, he had faced a decline in form, suffering four consecutive losses leading up to his final bout.
His last recorded fight was on December 24, 2024, when he was defeated by Idowu Raheed at the Campos Mini Stadium in Lagos.
