Kenyans on X (Twitter) have received the shocking news of the death of a popular social media personality, James Awandu, alias Jem Guru, or Jumuiyan, less than 24 hours after he openly mocked a politician who lost her son to an accident.

Jumuiyan, an outspoken voice on X, carved a niche for himself advocating good governance for his country, Kenya.

He got into a messy controversy on Wednesday when he made an insensitive post following the demise of Dagoretti North Member of Parliament, Beatrice Elachi, who succumbed to the injuries he sustained from an accident.

While others, including political opponents, were commiserating with the bereaved politician on X, Jumuiyan took to the same platform to write:

“The only support we can give Beatrice Elachi is finishing all the food they will cook at her son’s funeral.”

His controversial tweet quickly racked up over 60,000 views, close to 2000 likes and over 600 retweets.

Some netizens cautioned him that he was taking his activism too far and should be more humane in his criticism of government officials.

One of the people disappointed by his tweet, noted that he would mark his post till there would be a report of de@th in his own household too.

The tweep named Muya, with the handle, @geeklythoughts, wrote: “I’ll mark this post for when we attend a burial in your homestead bc you’re clearly celebrating the death of one of our ranks

Surprisingly, Jumuiyan passed away a few hours later.

His lifeless body was recovered from his apartment in Ngong town, southwest of the nation’s capital, Nairobi, by the police.

The body was taken to a morgue where an autopsy was planned for Thursday, March 27. The results are awaited to determine the actual cause of death.

The police said they are investigating his cause of death, but some sources hinted that it must have been suicide.

They alleged that the late activist had been battling depression for a while despite his public persona of toughness and intransigence.

However, many netizens are not buying the notion that he took his own life.

One Facebook user said the notion was not likely because he made some arrangements for yesterday (Thursday) and could not have done that if he wanted to k!ll himself.

Some are suggesting that some of the government officials he had been needling on social media might have had a hand in it and made it look like a suicide.

A Facebook user Peter Pogba wrote: “They did away with him. It’s just a cover-up story”

A man who identified himself as his lawyer on Facebook said he would ensure that justice was done for him.

Bruno Tush Walela wrote: “I represented him in court on 25th March 2025 and he was OK. We will ensure justice is served for #Jumuiyan.”
