Chaos erupted in Atakpa, near the bustling Calabar Watt Market in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, on Sunday, March 23, as a police officer allegedly went on a shooting spree, killing four innocent passersby.
Eyewitnesses reported that the armed officer suddenly began firing shots into the air, with stray bullets fatally hitting the victims.
The victims, according to witnesses, had no confrontation with the officer before the tragic incident occurred.
“The victims were innocent passersby who had no quarrel with the officer. It appears he ran amok,” one eyewitness recounted.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Cross River State Command, SP Irene Ugbo, stated that the officer’s actions suggested he might be suffering from a mental breakdown.
“The officer misbehaved, and we suspect he has become mentally unstable. This is our preliminary assumption at the moment,” Ugbo said.
She further assured that the Command is conducting investigations to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic shooting.
