The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a petition demanding the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central.

The petition, submitted on Monday and received by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, claims to have met the constitutional requirements, with over 200,000 registered voters signing in support of the recall.

The move follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent suspension from the Senate on March 6 over allegations of “gross misconduct” stemming from a dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The senator had previously accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.

Oriaran-Anthony assured that INEC would follow due process as outlined by the Constitution in addressing the petition.

Comrade Salihu Habeeb, representing the petitioners, expressed confidence that the recall effort would succeed, citing widespread support among constituents who seek more accountable representation.

“This will be the first successful recall process because we have spoken with one voice,” Habeeb said.

Another petitioner, Comrade Hamza Yakubu, emphasized that the recall was based on logic and public interest rather than emotions, urging INEC to act swiftly.

Similarly, Charity Jesse, a spokesperson for Kogi Youths and Women, reiterated that the petition was a response to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s alleged misconduct and failure to engage her constituents effectively.

A Federal High Court in Lokoja recently lifted an injunction that had previously restrained INEC from processing the recall petition.

The court ruled that the process is constitutionally valid, granting constituents the right to proceed with their demand.
