The Rivers State Government has expressed surprise over President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara while allowing Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a key player in the state’s prolonged political crisis, to remain in office.

In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the state government described the declaration of a state of emergency and Fubara’s removal as unjust.

Johnson emphasized that despite the political challenges, Governor Fubara has consistently upheld constitutional order, promoted peace, and prioritized good governance.

“Since assuming office, Governor Fubara has focused on protecting lives and property, fostering progress, and maintaining stability in Rivers State, even amid political instability,” Johnson stated.

He further noted that after President Tinubu’s intervention to mediate peace, the Rivers State Government acted in good faith by reinstating previously resigned commissioners and swiftly adhering to the Supreme Court’s ruling.

These actions, Johnson argued, demonstrate the state’s commitment to legal processes and democratic principles.

Despite these efforts, Johnson claimed that lawmakers loyal to Wike have continued to disrupt peace in the state.

He expressed shock that while Governor Fubara was removed, Wike, who he described as a major figure in the crisis, remains unaffected.

“It is shocking that Mr. President sacked the governor and left his minister, who is the principal actor,” Johnson remarked.

The Rivers State Government called on residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and resilient while reaffirming its dedication to engaging with relevant institutions to safeguard democracy and ensure the state’s continued progress.

“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” Johnson added.

The government pledged to prioritize the well-being and prosperity of Rivers State citizens as it navigates the ongoing political situation.
