A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Rita Uguamaye, who is serving in Lagos, has cried out over alleged threats from NYSC officials over a video she posted criticizing the rising cost of living in Nigeria.
The offending video was one where the corps member lamented how skyrocketing prices had made life unbearable for her as someone who was fending for herself.
She called President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a “terrible” person for failing to arrest the inflation and economic crisis.
“I just got back from a supermarket, and prices have increased again. Every week, things get more expensive. Eggs are now N6,500 per crate! I remember when they were N800. How are we supposed to survive?” she lamented.
She also complained about air pollution in Lagos, complaining that everywhere in Lagos smelled.
At some point in her tirades she broke down in tears saying that she was just tired of the entire hardship.
Roughly 24 hours after posting her video, she shared another clip revealing she had received threatening calls from NYSC officials asking her to pull down the video she made.
She filmed part of her interaction with the alleged NYSC official who can be heard saying, “Are you normal? Take down that video immediately!”
Rita complained that other officials had also called her to threaten her to remove the video and stop criticizing the government.
The incident has sparked discussions on free speech, economic hardship, and the rights of corps members to express their frustrations.
