Senator Ned Nwoko has urged the Nigerian Senate to uphold its principles and resist yielding to emotional pressures and social media outcry over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Nwoko emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and discipline of the legislative body, asserting that Nigeria’s democracy thrives when its institutions are strong and governed by established rules.

“The Senate must not bow to emotional blackmail or social media outrage fueled by half-truths,” Nwoko stated. “We must ensure that the principles of accountability, order, and respect remain the guiding forces of our legislative process.”

The controversy, dubbed ‘Natashagate,’ began on February 20, 2025, when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan protested a seat reallocation during a Senate session.

Her refusal to comply with the new seating arrangement led to a heated exchange and subsequent disciplinary actions. Nwoko clarified that seat reallocation is a standard practice within the Senate, often necessitated by changes such as defections or other circumstances affecting seating arrangements.

“Whenever a senator leaves for any reason, whether due to death, defection, or other circumstances, there is an adjustment in the seating arrangement,” Nwoko explained. “This happens across both party lines, and it is not targeted at any individual.”

The situation escalated when Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that has added layers of complexity to the ongoing dispute.

In response, the Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, citing her conduct on the Senate floor as the primary reason for the disciplinary action.

This suspension has sparked debates among political figures and some civil society organizations.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki expressed concern over the situation, emphasizing the need to protect the integrity of the Senate.

He advocated an open and transparent investigation into the allegations to uphold the institution’s values.

Similarly, the Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy (CODWA) condemned Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension, labeling it an abuse of power and a violation of constitutional rights.

The organization called for Senate President Akpabio to recuse himself from the matter to allow for an impartial investigation.

Nwoko, however, cautioned against allowing sentiments to override discipline within the legislative framework. He stressed that the issue at hand is about maintaining the dignity of the institution and ensuring that every member adheres to the same standards of conduct.

“This is not about silencing anyone; it is about ensuring that the Senate remains a place of reasoned debate, not theatrical disruptions,” Nwoko asserted.
