Renowned Nigerian writer and literary pioneer, Mabel Segun, has passed away at the age of 95.

Her family confirmed the news in a statement released late Thursday, revealing that the esteemed novelist, tennis champion, broadcaster, and diplomat died in the early hours of the day.

The statement expressed gratitude for her impactful life and contributions to literature, broadcasting, and sports. It also noted that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well spent in the pursuit of excellence in Literature, Broadcasting, and Sports that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mabel Dorothy Okanima Segun (née Aig-Imoukhuede),” the family stated.

Born on February 18, 1930, Segun was a trailblazer in Nigerian literature and education.

She earned her degree in English Literature, Latin, and History from University College Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan) in 1953, marking the beginning of an illustrious career that spanned decades.

Throughout her lifetime, Segun broke barriers and inspired generations with her literary works and advocacy for education. Her legacy remains deeply rooted in Nigerian culture and history.
