Supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, who gathered at the National Assembly Complex to stage a protest in support of her, were dispersed by the Nigeria Police Force this morning, March 5.
The supporters had assembled at the assembly gate about 8 am this morning, carrying various placards showing support for the senator who is accusing the Senate President of sexual harassment.
The police guarding the complex fired tear gas into their midst to disperse them and prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition was scheduled to meet and interrogate Akpoti-Uduaghan today.
The protesters had converged on the national assembly gate before the scheduled hearing or even the day’s plenary session.
The senator had had a shouting match with the Senate President over the reassignment of her seat in the chamber.
Following her altercation with the Senate President, the matter was referred to the Ethics Committee.
Last Friday, Akpoti-Uduaghan made an allegation of sexual harassment against Akpabio on a live TV interview.
She claimed Akpabio was victimising her because she refused to give in to his sexual advances.
