Scale of justice

A Magistrate Court sitting in Ilesa, Osun State, has ordered a woman, Rhoda Adu, to pay N150,000 to her boyfriend, Olapitan Sola, as damages for failing to visit him as promised after collecting transport fare.

The dispute arose after Rhoda, requested and received N3,000 for transportation to visit Sola but failed to show up.

Sola, feeling disappointed and frustrated by Rhoda’s actions, reported the matter to the police after she switched off her phone.

The incident was reported to the Ayeso Police Station, leading to Rhoda’s arrest and subsequent charge in the Magistrate Court.

During the trial, Sola presented evidence, including mobile money transfer receipts and WhatsApp messages between the two, which supported his claims.

Magistrate Akogun Oludare ruled that Rhoda must repay the N3,000 transport fare, as well as an additional N100,000 for breach of agreement and N50,000 for emotional distress caused by her failure to show up.

The court stressed that the judgment was intended to serve as a warning against similar actions by others in the future.
