Five-storey building under construction collapses in Apapa

A five-storey building under construction collapsed in Apapa, Lagos state, on Sunday, April 23.

Eyewitnesses claim the building collapsed due to a thunder strike orchestrated by heavy rainfall.

The collapsed building was located on 45, Ladipo Oluwole Street, GRA Apapa area of the state.

This incident comes a few days after a seven-story building collapsed in Banana Island area of the state. It was gathered that no casualties were recorded as all the workers at the site had gone to their homes for the Sallah break.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about building safety standards in Lagos State, where cases of structural collapse have been repeatedly reported in recent years. Residents of the area described the scene as chaotic, with sympathisers and passersby gathering shortly after the collapse.

Although no casualties were recorded in this incident, the near-miss has renewed conversations around compliance with building regulations and the quality of materials used in construction projects across the state.

Emergency responders and relevant authorities were expected to assess the site to prevent further risk and determine the structural integrity of nearby buildings. Investigations are also likely to focus on the circumstances surrounding the construction process and whether proper approvals were obtained.

The incident comes amid growing public concern over construction safety in Lagos, particularly in high-density areas where ongoing developments continue alongside existing residential and commercial structures.
