The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed optimism that the coronavirus pandemic will be defeated in 2022.
According to WHO chief, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu the disease will be defeated if countries stop “narrow nationalism and vaccine hoarding”
Dr Tedros noted that there are now many more tools to treat Covid-19.
“Narrow nationalism and vaccine hoarding by some countries have undermined equity and created the ideal conditions for the emergence of the Omicron variant, and the longer inequity continues, the higher the risks of the virus evolving in ways we can’t prevent or predict,” he said.
“If we end inequity in 2022, we end the pandemic,” he added.
It has been two years since coronavirus was first noticed by the WHO in China.
Months later it spread round the world and turned to a pandemic.
As at press time, global Covid cases now stand at 287 million, while nearly 5.5m people have died.
